Aug 11th, 2021, 10:35pm

Here is a report from the BBC regarding the major fire that broke out at a main transmitter serving part of the north east of England.

All services were disrupted for several hours

"Mast operators, Arqiva, said it had managed to restore TV and radio services for hundreds of thousands of people."

Latest from Arqiva....here, via BBC Tees.

"A new interim TV mast to replace the fire damaged Bilsdale transmitter is set to be activated on Wednesday.
The 252ft (80m) mast at Bilsdale will benefit more than 100,000 homes in North Yorkshire, County Durham and the Tees Valley, operator Arqiva said."

According to this BBC site

"A fire which destroyed a TV and radio transmitter was caused by water getting into electrics at the site, an investigation has found.
The Bilsdale transmitter caught fire on 10 August, leaving more than 600,000 homes across Teesside, County Durham and North Yorkshire without signals.
Arqiva, which operated the mast on the North York Moors, said the water damage was connected to third-party equipment"

During the 30 years that I was with BBC Transmission, there were several big shutdowns but everyone knew we were doing our best to restore the service and there was never any question of compensation.

Alas we've now gone down the American route of "If there's a problem, somebody must be responsible and that somebody must pay a penalty".

Helpline to be turned off.

According to this site, the Arqiva helpline is to be turned off.

"Adrian Twyning, chief of operations at Arqiva, said: “Only a very small percentage of all viewers served by the Bilsdale mast have needed to contact our helpline for support since we switched on the new mast."
