Paying for The BBC
Aug 3rd, 2010, 7:38pm

OK. This is one of those topics that seems to appear with a monotonous regularity.

Had this auspicious web-site existed in 1950 the question might still have been asked....

How would YOU pay for the BBC?

In the light of so much recent press hysteria.......

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/poll/2010/aug/02/bbc-tv-licence-fee-adam...

etc etc...

Option "7" This option is for those who are so bored with the subject they would rather go for the "The BBC is good enough to stand up for itself" option and could fight as long as it wasn't restricted by the present regulations, and was on a level playing-field....

Option "8" If you vote for number 8 then you are duty-bound to let us know WHAT you suggest!

So, please vote... but remember, your idea might be so good, it just might be accepted!
Someone 'out there (VERY important)' might be reading your suggestion......

Oh, and by the way, what do you think the TV Licence should be next year?..

Thank you.

We'll let you know the results ........ at a later date!

In this modern age the cost of Producing high quality radio and television has gone beyond all expectation.  The licence fee is always set in retrospect often by a hostile Government and will never catch up with the actual costs.

Surely now is the time to match the charges made by cable and satellite companies and make the revenue derived from advertising transparent.  Every box of corn flakes or bottle of bleach we buy has a charge on it that ought to be added to the cost of ITV yet this hidden fee is seldom discussed.

For the modest BBC licence fee we get numerous radio and television channels some of them so specialised they wither on the vine of popularity even though the BBC mandate is for BROAD-casting.....to Educate, Entertain and Inform ALL corners of society.

The benign days of J B Priestly and Lord Reith are long gone should not now the BBC grow up and enter the real World ?  Cry

If you like your programmes broken up by advertisements then paying for the BBC by advertising is one way of doing it.

However I much prefer to watch without the story line taking a break and then being refreshed just after the adverts incase I might have forgotten! I have taken to recording such programmes and spooling through the breaks but this is far from ideal.

The cost of the BBC gives very good value for the money and I don't see why the licence system should be abandoned to satisfy commercial interests.
