BBC board looks for non-executive directors by Geoff White

The BBC has put out the first adverts for its new non-executive directors, who will join the executive board when the corporation restructures next year.

The five non-executive directors will sit on the executive board with the director general, Mark Thompson, and other heads of department such as director of television Jana Bennett and BBC Worldwide chief executive John Smith.

The new posts are part of a drive to establish the executive board as a separate entity to the BBC governors, who have been accused of not being strict enough on the board.

They will work an average of two days a month, helping the board make decisions on services and bringing an "external perspective" to the business.

The job advert calls for "extensive experience" of serving at board level, and calls for a range of experience "likely to include telecommunications or new media markets".

No salary is given for the role, and the closing date for applications is 8 September.

The governors are set to be replaced by a 12-strong BBC Trust next year, chaired by Michael Grade. Three of the trustee positions have already been filled, with applications currently being assessed for the remaining eight vacancies.
