"Look! -North-West"
Aug 22nd, 2015, 9:05am

Alex Connock (Managing Director of Shine North and Chairman of the Royal Television Society North West), has contributed, in a personal capacity, to:-

"Our BEEB- The future of The BBC".

In the article he examines the impact of the BBC's decision to move some departments north to Manchester.

He illustrates the impact the BBC has had on other media production companies in the North West of England, and compares the lack of similar investments in the North East of England.

"If we tinker with the BBC we take a risk of undoing our uniqueness and becoming like everyone else - without the global impact of a BBC-powered creative economy."

His article is an extract from a forthcoming book:- The BBC Today: Future Uncertain. Ed. John Mair, Professor Richard Tait and Professor Richard Lance Keeble. Isbn: 9781845496562

The article may be read:- here, as part of 'Open Democracy'.

There’s not just a lack of investment in broadcasting in the North East but other regions. That need became even more noticeable when the regional ITV stations in England were taken over to form one giant ITV channel. Not only did many jobs in those centres disappear but also local programming and identity.

BBC regions have never really done the job on quite the same scale. Now ITV has left the field there’s one great hole to be filled. What a pity the BBC, which attaches so much importance to both local radio at one end of the scale and moving “national” productions out of London at the other, has neglected truly regional output.

My argument would be that instead of expanding its corporate and international image it should look more to its tv regions, perhaps even do what ITV did (and how the German regional public ARD stations work today), creating real regional flavour and identity.
