'Phones or Broadcast?
Jan 13th, 2015, 12:59pm

The EU, (courtesy of the Digital TV Group) has started a consultation on the use of spectrum.

This subject sounds very technical and boring, however the use of certain parts of what used to be 'Broadcast' spectrum is now very valuable for use by 'other interests'.

These 'other interests' are the mobile telecoms industry.

The frequencies are 'just right' for their use and they wish to commandeer them for their customers.

Hence this EU consultation.

'Coveted', and 'Highly Desirable' has been used to describe certain parts of the UHF spectrum.

The ramifications for broadcasters are immense.

This is from the EU:-

"At the moment, the 700 MHz band is mostly used for broadcasting and wireless microphones. The broadband and telecoms sectors are both keen to secure the future use of this highly sought-after band for deploying new wireless and digital services The consultation will run until 12 April 2015 and will help the Commission define a long-term strategy for the UHF band."

Here is the EU introduction.

"Pascal Lamy and top executives from Europe's broadcasters, network operators, mobile companies and tech associations have been given six months to make proposals to the European Commission on how to use the UHF spectrum band (470-790 MHz) most effectively in coming decades.

In the face of a rapid and massive growth in demand for spectrum – as consumers demand new broadcast and internet options – Digital Commissioner Neelie Kroes is asking for quick results: a final report will be delivered by July 2014.

Neelie Kroes said: “Europe needs to use spectrum more effectively if we want to benefit from the latest TV and internet developments. That's why we need a new consensus on how to use broadcast spectrum, and that’s why I made the coordination of broadband spectrum a central feature of our effort to build a telecoms single market.”"

We all use this spectrum, whether we
are viewers of Digital Terrestrial TV,
are Audio Supervisors on multi-radio-mic live broadcasts,
use smartphones,
or attend a simple Village-Hall 'event'.

The EU Press Information is here.

Basically, do you want more TV channels or do you (or someone else) want to use a smartphone where you live?
