DG:- Future Plans and Changes
Jul 10th, 2014, 9:44am

"We are going to go further than we have ever done before in opening the BBC to more competition. A competition revolution."

DG Tony Hall has given a far-reaching speech at the City University in London.

Courtesy of the BBC Media Centre, here is his speech.

"‘Compete or Compare’. That is our strategy.

Competition is good for the BBC and I want more of it."

To me, this seems to make two points.
One - BBC 'Production' must be broken up, as there's no longer any point in the BBC employing them.
Two - the fact that all the ex-BBC people "have done very well" (to quote a young Mr Grace!) is an excuse to get rid of the rest of them, as the BBC will now be "BBC Commissioning".
As for anyone with any craft skills, well, "if you learned that from your time with the Beeb, good luck to you, but we don't want/need you anymore - until there's a Royal Funeral/Coronation, that is! In the meantime, go work for one of the new production companies" who'll then find out just why the Beeb's cost are 'different' (as SiS found).

The only ones who come out of this with any glimmer of hope are those in BBC News - which, given his heritage, is only to be expected.
Short of selling out to Sky News - or maybe ITN - no one else could provide such worldwide coverage.

But this shows he's really started campaigning for the renewal of the Charter when it's still some way ahead!!

Birt may have failed Thatcher, but her desire to reduce the BBC to a publisher/broadcaster reaches fruition?
