BBC Sport announces successful bidders for outside broadcast contracts

Following a highly competitive tender process, contracts have been awarded to CTV, NEP Visions, Presteigne Charter and Telegenic. The contracts cover major events and sports as set out below.

The tender process was designed to ensure a high quality of service delivery and best value for money for license fee payers, whilst encouraging innovation and creativity from bidders.

Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport, said: “We were hugely impressed by the calibre of the bids we received. The mix of suppliers we now have ensures best value for money for licence fee payers and will bring more innovation to the BBC’s coverage of sporting events."

BBC Sport and their current supplier, SIS Live, were unable to reach a commercial agreement for the provision of some of BBC Sport’s outside broadcast services. SIS Live will cease their work with BBC Sport at the end of their current contract in March 2014.

Barbara Slater added: “We are extremely grateful for the role played by SIS Live and its staff in covering sports events over many years. We are very disappointed that an agreement could not be reached and it goes without saying that we wish them all the best in their future endeavours.”

Contracts awarded as part of the tender process were as follows:

Athletics – NEP Visions
The Boat Race - CTV
Football - CTV
Formula 1 - Presteigne Charter
London Marathon - CTV
Ruby League - Telegenic
Rugby Union - Telegenic
Tennis – NEP Visions
Wimbledon – NEP Visions
Due to the unique technical requirements needed to deliver The Open Golf Championship, the outcome of this tender is not yet concluded but will be announced in due course along with a number of other contracts including the FA Cup, Sports Personality of the Year and Olympic sports.

I suppose this is nearly the end of the road for BBC TVOBs.
Not one strand could Sport award to them!

I guess that's what happens when BBC Management really want to screw the system over.

RIP BBC OBs and Palace of Arts, Kendal Avenue and, for a very short time, Langley.
We had good times there though and were the leaders in OB technology throughout Televisions formative years.

You can read the view of Garry Smith, CE of SIS, here.

"Smith said it was too early to say if there would be job losses among SIS Live’s 230 staff, the “vast majority” of which are ex-BBC staff who joined the company when it acquired the BBC’s OB division in 2008.

SIS Live’s work for BBC Sport accounts for a third of the company’s OB contracts and its focus now is on finding new business with other broadcasters, Smith said.

He confirmed SIS would now undertake a four week-long review of its OB division.

“No business can lose a third of its work without considering the impact,” he said. “We will spend the next month talking to other customers with OB requirements."

"Ariel" has a report here.

"SIS Live - which bought BBC outside broadcasts in 2008 and took on around 300 BBC OB specialists - has helped the corporation cover many high profile sporting events including the Olympics, Wimbledon, the London Marathon and the Boat Race"

According to Televisual.

"SIS is struggling to sell its OB fleet as a going concern.

The fleet, which has been on sale since October last year, is now understood to have been re-tendered so that the OB units could be split up among different buyers.

The assets include six large HD trucks, two 12 camera HD units and two small 6 and 8 camera units plus a fleet of SD trucks. "
