Drama: retrospective of Tony Garnett's work
Jun 1st, 2013, 4:00pm

I thought that people might like to know about the season of work by drama producer Tony Garnett, currently running at the BFI in London. The second half of the season starts this week, featuring seven screenings, many of them introduced by Garnett.  I have greatly enjoyed the productions I've seen this last month and thought I should pass this on.

“For 50 years, Tony Garnett has been one of TV’s most influential figures. A close collaborator with the likes of Ken Loach and Jim Allen, he has produced and fostered a succession of provocative, radical and sometimes incendiary dramas”

“Perhaps precisely because Garnett realises the unique value of the BBC, having worked both within its ranks and outside the organisation, he is also one of its fiercest critics. His frustrations with the way the BBC was being managed at the time crystallised with the publication of his 2009 article ‘How to Kill Creativity While Claiming to Help It Grow’, a critique of the BBC management structure and commissioning process…”    BFI programme notes
