TVC / Local Councils
May 21st, 2013, 5:25pm

Ian Hillson, via The "Tech OPs Forum" (Thanks Bernie) has provided two more places where comments and feedback may be lodged.

Change.org here.

London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham here.

Add your comments to those already listed, like these:-

I worked at Television for almost 50 years. It is, undoubtedly, THE finest TV studio centre in the world. The word going around that it is an analogue dinosaur is totally untrue. It is equipped with the very latest digital systems including high definition, 3D and Dolby 5.1 surround sound. To close studios 4 to 8 would rob the expanding TV industry of vital facilities.

I am a freelance TV lighting director. I work in studios all over the country. These are without question the best designed and best equipped studios in the UK bar none. Over the past five or so years they have been getting busier and busier as the demand for studio space has increased. they are extremely efficient and able to turn shows round overnight,

London needs the studio capacity, the destruction of TC8 in particular would be criminal. Please don''t let them do it.

Tv and film studios are fully booked, productions have nowhere to go. There will be no more jobs for people in west london working in TV, but more shops for people who cant find jobs, more shops when Westfield already exists. All of the studios and the entire question mark building ought to be listed and kept as a whole. I was lucky enough to graduate from university and get work in the television industry and work at television centre.

The BBC and Stanhope should be stopped from destroying studios that are irreplaceable - nothing like them will ever be built again and they are not only fit for purpose - they are PERFECTLY designed and user-friendly. Do what you want with the rest of the site - but the studios should not be touched.

It's worth noting that the latest comments added to the council web-site:-

"I worked for the BBC for 40 years. Cost saving exercises have gradually eaten away at the foundation of the best broadcasting organisation in the world which was staffed by an unparalleled collection of programme makers all highly trained, motivated and skilled. Accountants, a breed correctly described as "knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing" lost sight of the fact that BBC makes programmes, removed programme makers like myself from the staff (formerly an investment now a cost) but retained even increased management who do not make programmes and it seems could not manage, squandering huge sums on Management Consultants. Management and Consultants had an increasing disconnection to and ignorance of programmes. Those who run the BBC have exhibited wanton ignorance of the reason for the BBC''s existence and furthermore, criminal negligence in the stewardship of the license payers ownership and investment in Broadcasting. Television Centre may still be saved and it is crucial to do so. Its loss will accelerate the downward spiral of BBC programme making to the point of no return. Cutting capacity will increase cost in TV production when the aim is to reduce cost."

"The current plans just don’t work. The three surviving studios, cut off from the natural infrastructure of the circle will be unable to function efficiently. Inadequate thought has been given to security, or the logistics of audiences, artists, scenery, equipment, etc. A noisy, 24-hour television operation, so close to residential property, is an impossible situation for both sides. The shared use of the Ring Road will render it inoperable. With Westfield Shopping Centre, Shepherd’s Bush Market and two busy high-streets nearby, the shops are unlikely to attract much custom. Likewise, the offices and the shoebox-sized flats for non-motorists may remain empty. After dark, the unsecured public areas are likely to become an unsavoury shelter for the substance-abusers of Shepherd’s Bush Green. And, as Pinewood Studios are now arguing, there is now a major shortage of studio space in the London area - so why demolish them?"

While I don't know the two contributors, I do agree with their sentiments.
