Help needed!
Oct 24th, 2012, 9:18pm

Hi there,

Is there anyway i can find out about my grandfather's work history from the BBC?

I've tried for the last year to speak to people working for Ariel (now closed down). Some Archive people (who never got back to me after they said they would).

He died in 1989 - and after the revelations recently i suspect will not have time to help.

BUT - i really want to find out about him before it's too late. He would have been 72 this year.

Thank you for reading.

Emma

I heard that about ten years after retiring or demise the BBC routinely destroys the personnel files so you might find it easier to contact names of people you know with whom he worked.

Not wishing to seem too off-hand about it, but it would help us here if you could identify your grandfather! [He must have had a name, after all!]

Do you have any idea of what sort of period he might have been there?
You say he died in '89, but what age would he have been then?
After all, there have been many thousands of people who worked for the BBC [let's not revive that old joke here!]

Do you have any idea of what he might have done when he was working there?
Did he work in Radio or Television?
Was it in London, or perhaps one of the other "island" sites?
Was he a 'tradesman' (Journalist or Technician?) or Manager?

Thank you Roundabout - i managed to find one person who has been sending me information on who he worked with. That's been wonderful Smiley

Hi JohnW - Yep, sorry i assumed (wrongly) people would see my other post. Here is some more info for you:

Hello,

I'm an ex-bbc'er (wasn't there for very long) but tried and failed to find anything about my grandfather - Clifford Henry Richardson - who worked for the Beeb from 1964(ish) to 1989 when he passed away. He was 49 when he died.

There's all sorts of versions of what he did - floor manager, boom operator, lighting man... scene shifter!

I don't really mind knowing what he actually did but i would love to know about stories and photos of him that may be in someone's photo album.

I was at the Beeb from 2003-2004 on a training scheme. I met some of his old colleagues on the set of Eastenders and Judge John Deeds (i was working on the prog at the time).

It was wonderful knowing that so many people still remembered him.

Did you know him? Did you work with him? Do you have any stories or photos of you and him together? If so i would love to hear from you.

I remember that he took me around the BBC when i was 7/8 back in 1986. I met some of the Production team and remember vaguely the models, the drafting studios - in 2003 they were green rooms! Very sad. I know i met some staff - i was shown the set of Record Breakers whilst a man was painting the floor.

My family are very closed about who he was. He was my champion and even though he died 23 years ago a day never goes by that i think of him.

Thank you for reading  Emma

Someone confirmed that he was a Show Working Scenic Supervisor in 1977 today. I'm making headway!
