Chris Underwood
Aug 31st, 2012, 2:50pm

Former Home Affairs correspondent, Chris Underwood, has died at his home in Walton-on-Thames.  He was in his early 70s and had been suffering from colon cancer and emphysma.
He worked on the Daily Mail before joining the BBC as a reporter in the 1970s. He was chairman of the IOJ for many years.
His son Mark will tell me when the funeral is and I will post it on this site.

From the family of Chris Underwood:

Funeral Service and Reception to Commemorate the Life of Christopher John Underwood

Further details about the arrangements for Chris’s funeral:

The Funeral Service and Committal will take place at Randall’s Park Crematorium at 11.45 am on Monday 17th of September.

In keeping with Chris’s wishes, the Service will be conducted by a Humanist Celebrant. As we want the Reception afterwards to be a celebration of Chris’s life, we are keen that people take this opportunity to share their memories of their time with him.

The Reception will be held at Woodlands Park Hotel, which is a 3 minute drive from the Crematorium. Further details about how to get to the Crematorium and hotel are shown below:

Leatherhead Crematorium: the address of the Crematorium is Randalls Road, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT22 0AG

Parking: there are 93 parking spaces available (3 disabled) at the Crematorium,so it would be really helpful if you could share your car with someone.

Directions from M25 Motorway: leave the M25 at junction 9 and follow the A245 onto Randalls Road.

Directions from Leatherhead Train Station: the train station is approximately 0.8 miles from the Crematorium. Exit the station and head south onto Station Approach. Station Approach leads directly onto Randalls Road. Head west onto Randalls Road in the direction of the Crematorium.

Woodlands Park Hotel

The address for the hotel is: Woodlands Lane Stoke D'Abernon, Cobham, Surrey KT11 3QB.

The hotel is approximately 1.3 miles from the Crematorium. Follow the road out of the Crematorium and turn left onto Randalls Road (A245). Follow Randalls Road north. The road bears left onto Woodlands  Lane and the hotel is on the left hand side.

Flowers and Donations

Family flowers only. Donations, if desired, to Cancer Research c/o F WChitty & Co, New Zealand Avenue, Walton on Thames KT12 1QD.

Attire

We want you to wear whatever you consider is appropriate to the occasion, but please don’t feel obliged to wear black. We wish the occasion to be as informal as possible, so would want you to wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

RSVP

For catering purposes it would be really helpful if you could email either Mark or Mary at the following addresses:

mjdunderwood - insert the @ here - gmail.com

maryhoneyball - insert the @ here - gmail.com

Many thanks,

Mark Underwood & Mary Honeyball

The UK Press Gazette carries a tribute to Chris, in which he is described by former BBC colleague Paul Leighton as a "journalist, broadcaster, raconteur and thoroughly Good Egg. RIP."

Read the UKPG obituary here.

More than a hundred people, including family and friends, ex-colleagues from the BBC, Daily Mail, Institute of Journalists, MCC and Surrey ccc attended Chris Underwood's funeral at Randalls Park Crematorium, Leatherhead on September 17th.
It was conducted by Trevor Moore of the British Humanist Association. The eulogy was given by his friend Peter Gallimore who recounted some of the more humorous aspects of the former home affairs correspondent's career at the BBC.  His son, Mark Underwood, read from the novel "In the Red" in which a not too disguised Chris featured.
His partner of the last six years, Mary Honeyball, MEP, said they had been the best six years of her life.
Afterwards a lively reception, as Chris would have liked, was held at the nearby Woodlands Park Hotel.
