Local Radio AM switch-off commences.
Aug 19th, 2012, 10:36pm

BBC Radio Kent, BBC Radio Lincolnshire, BBC Radio Merseyside and BBC Radio Nottingham have all stopped broadcasting regular programmes on medium wave, instead directing listeners to FM or DAB."

"The BBC has chosen Kent, Lincolnshire, Merseyside and Nottingham areas because they have different levels of MW coverage and allow them to test a spread of MW coverage in both rural and city locations, they said.

It’s part of a five week trial to make savings – and to find out if listeners will miss or complain about the lack of AM services.

The changes started on Friday and will finished on September 24th."

"Radio Today" reports that:-

"A trial to turn-off medium-wave transmitters at some BBC local radio stations is to continue after hardly any listeners complained.

BBC Radio Nottingham’s MW transmitter, and Radio Kent’s relay at Rusthall near Tunbridge Wells on 1602kHz, will now remain off-air, possibly indefinitely. The BBC says “This is because we want to assess the impact of a longer-term switch-off, given the low number of response in these areas.”

Does anyone actually really mind this happening?...unless you still have a radio that only gets AM and Long Wave--you are not exactly stuck .

The "Guardian" follows up the AM switch-off here.

"The BBC's hopes of saving money by switching off local radio broadcasts on AM came unstuck in Liverpool when 600 listeners complained about the loss of their medium-wave service."
