David Clarke
Aug 10th, 2012, 8:39am

David Clarke's career spanned forty years, from his first film in 1973, to Gaffer on his latest feature in 2010. His experience was in film and photography, beginning as an assistant to the legendary Brian Duffy, and via twenty years as a BBC photographer, onto working as a lighting designer and consultant to a new generation  of photographers and film makers.

He learnt his stills lighting from Erwin Hillier and another legend, Jack Cardiff.
His appreciation and respect of whom he worked with was obvious, in the telling of great stories, as he was an amazingly witty raconteur! He did stills with Sir Laurence Olivier, Lauren Bacall, Shelley Winters, to name but a few.

After leaving the BBC, and travelling, he went to live and work in Falmouth, to teach and to film, and his legacy, apart from his talent, is that he was much loved by all who knew him. So much so, that folks want to arrange two wakes, one in London, one in Falmouth, to commemorate his passion for work, life and people. Truly one of the nicest, generous guys in show-business.

His untimely death at the age of sixty on July 10th was a very sad blow indeed.

He wrote in his CV,that some thirty years earlier, an old Lighting Gaffer solved a problem for him, easily, and said,”when I'm gone none of you so and so's will know that, so tell the ones coming behind you!”, he duly did, as his students will testify to.

Make 'em laugh up there David as much as you did everyone you knew here.
From one of his many friends,Eve Wignall.
