"What NBC Can Learn From the BBC -- and Vice Versa -- About Televising the Olympics. Observations From the Former GM of an NBC Affiliate"

This is from "TV Week".

"...............And the old TV guy in me says, “dress up!” For God sakes, you male commentators are on national television broadcasting the Olympic games to your home country. A tee shirt and jeans is just not acceptable. Roone Arledge would have you in a tie and matching blazers with a BBC or Olympic logo on your pocket. It’s a big deal. You could at least put on a coat and tie. You are also representing your country. The women presenters dress much better.

I’m guessing a lot of Americans would resent paying $226 a year to the government for commercial-free HD channels, radio and Web. (“European Socialism.”) But this summer, it looks like quite a bargain."

... although I though Colin Jackson looked rather "out-of-place" when he was dressed up in 'jacket, collar and tie' - whereas the others were almost in shirt-sleeve order!! [I know Michael Johnson looks so smart and upright all the time, so he can get away without a tie!]

Nah, I disagree with the American. I don't think that the contributors to the "scene-setting" need to be that formal. But Hugh Edwards is always smartly dressed (in collar and tie!) when presenting the News from the Olympic park studio.

P.S. I trust that all readers have watched the 'walkaround' of the BBC's "complex" on the park, which is to be found on YouTube.

Specifically at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18981562 Dont bother with letters online etc as they are way out of date!! I just go back to my paper copy of "Ariel special colour edition" for what things used to be like Mike
