A man has been charged with murdering his BBC radio presenter father.

Howard Winton Cooper, known to broadcast fans by his middle name, was found dead in his luxury home on Friday evening.

His 23-year-old son Joseph was arrested by police shortly after the neighbours made the discovery and he has since been charged with his father’s murder.

The younger Mr Cooper is due to appear before magistrates today.

Retired BBC Radio Sheffield reporter Winton Cooper,64, was found dead at his £420,000 home in Ham Meadow, Marnhull, near Sturminster Newton in Dorset.

His son also lived in the picturesque village, depicted in Thomas Hardy’s novel Tess of the D’Urbevilles as Marlot, but not at the same address as his father.

'Joseph Cooper from Marnhull near Sturminster Newton has been charged with murder,' said a police spokesman.

'He will appear before Weymouth magistrates on Monday, April 18.

'While the deceased man is yet to be identified he is believed to be Howard Winton Cooper, born in 1947, the father of the charged man.

'Detectives are renewing their appeal for information and for anyone with information to come forward.'

Former reporter Winton Cooper covered the Hillsborough disaster during his time on Radio Sheffield.

One of the most popular presenters at the station, he often worked alongside former footballer Emlyn Hughes in the commentary box and hosted a weekly show broadcast on Saturday mornings.

On April 15, 1989 Mr Cooper was reporting at the ill-fated FA Cup semi-final tie between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough.

Speaking in 2009, his former boss at BBC Radio Sheffield Robert Jackson said that Mr Cooper was covering the match from the press box, but did not know the extent of the tragedy that was unfolding.

'People were being laid out on the ground but he assumed they were injured because no-one was covering them with blankets at that stage.'

A post mortem examination was due to be carried out on Winton Cooper to establish how he died, and the Dorset coroner had been informed of his death.

Neighbours said both men were well known in the area, and that Winton Cooper was a popular figure in the village.

'It’s so sad because Winton was a lovely man, he would never hurt anyone,' said pub landlord Gino Gibbs.

It is believed that as well as Joseph, Winton Cooper had two sons - Oliver and Edward.

'The whole village is in deep shock, it’s all anyone is talking about,' added Mr Gibbs - who runs the Crown Pub in Marnhull.
