"Sack the Marketing dept"
Feb 20th, 2011, 8:48pm

Paul Donovan, the Sunday Times radio critic, has been poring over the BBC Trust's report on Radios 3, 4 and 7.  If you want to read the Trust's report yourself click here.

We can't link to Donovan's report because it's behind a paywall but the main thrust of what he has to say is this:

"- 32% of whites, 59% of blacks and 72% of Asians are unaware of Radio 4. Those are such extraordinary figures, and so shameful, you have to read them several times before you can take them in. But there they are, tucked away in paragraph 121.

- Only 20% of the population, and 33% of Radio 4 listeners, have ever heard of Radio 7.

- Only a third of classical music listeners make the link between the Proms and Radio 3, which broadcasts them all.

Such stupendous ignorance should make the trust anguished. It is supposed to be the BBC’s regulator, not just its cheerleader. I would have thought that the figures constitute a good argument for sacking the BBC’s entire marketing department."
