David Thomson

I am still a BBC radio producer but also a writer - I am seeking information on the former Third Programme/Features producer David Thomson.  He died in 1988 and, I think, left the BBC in 1969.  For present day Radio 3 I am writing a talk about him and his work for TX on 4th March.  As well as a producer (he made The People of the Sea about seals and their legends, and The Great Hunger about the Irish famine and many others) he was a wonderful writer (books on the same subjects as his radio work but others too).  Some of his programmes survive, some papers are in the National Library of Scotland and his books are readily available.  But does anyone remember him?  He knew, for example, Tom Crowe, who died recently - or at least I think he did.  A Tom Crowe is mentioned in his book Woodbrook and I assume this is the young former announcer.  Can anyone confirm this?  I would be extremely grateful for any information on this or any other facet of David Thomson's life and work.  Many thanks.

I may be able to help. If it is the chap I think you are referring to, I was at school with one of his sons who is still a good friend of mine.

Ian, thank you.  David had three sons - Tim, Luke and Ben.  They grew up in Camden Town I think from the late 50s on.  His widow Martina is still alive and lives in the family home still.  Would this fit the people you know or knew?
Thanks very much,  Tim Dee
