Chris Evans
Dec 2nd, 2003, 11:50am

Chris Evans, who despite his young age was in charge of many big building projects, has died.  Chris designed and saw through to completion numerous new newsrooms, including the broadcasting centre at Millbank, the World Service newsroom and the Stage 6 extrension at Television Centre.  More recently he was in charge of the major project to redevelop the Broadcasting House site.  He became ill in the summer and died in hospital in North London on December 1st.  He was 43.
Note funeral details in posting below.

Richard Sambrook, Director of News and Current Affairs, distributed this tribute:
I am very sad to announce the death of Chris Evans last night, after an intense but short struggle with cancer.

Chris was memorable in all he did, six feet eleven inches and a tall man in all senses of the word. He was a committed professional, a great colleague and a friend to  many.

Some of you will know him from his early days in Premise Operations or Facilities, where he ended up as Manager for TVC.  He knew every nut and bolt of the building, knowledge that was to prove invaluable at the time of the IRA bomb attack in 2001, when Chris returned to help put the building back on its feet in an amazing three days. It was in Facilities that he met his partner, Pippa Cosens.

Some of you will know him from News where he masterminded, among other things, the move from BH to Stage 6, and some from the new Broadcasting House Project, where he was Project Director.   Chris gave the new building its blueprint, and guided it through its obstacle-ridden inception, achieving approval from Westminster City Council in record time.

All his friends and colleagues in Property, News and Facilities Management will remember him with great affection. We hope to record Chris’s connection to the new Broadcasting House via some permanent memorial.

I will keep you informed of arrangements about a memorial service.

Richard Sambrook

This announcement, quoting John Smith, was posted on the Gateway internal system:

Chris Evans, the project director for the new Broadcasting House in London, died last night of cancer, aged 43.

John Smith, director of Finance, Property & Business Affairs, said: ‘Six feet 11 inches in his stockinged feet, Chris was never an easy man to overlook. Few who met him forgot him – and not only for his height but also his engagement, his common touch, his infectious enthusiasm, drive and good humour.’

Evans trained as a lawyer, but pursued a BBC career in Property, joining in 1988 as an assistant manager in Premises Operations and working up through the ranks to become facilities manager for TVC in 1996.

He then masterminded the News transfer to Stage 6 at TVC, and helped get the building back on stream within three days of the republican bomb attack in 2001. Later that year, he was appointed project director for the new Broadcasting House project - the £600m plan to transform the BBC’s London HQ.

John Smith adds: ‘Chris gave the building its blueprint, its management vision, and charted it through its obstacle-ridden inception process, achieving approval from Westminster City Council in record time.

‘All his friends and colleagues in Property, News and Facilities management will remember him with the strongest affection, and he leaves – quite literally – a building behind him with his name firmly on it

Chris's funeral took place on Tuesday, December 9th.  Hundreds of people attended a service in All Souls Church, Langham Place.  It was led by the Rector, Prebendary Richard Bewes, who had got to know Chris in the course of planning meetings for the Broadcasting House redevelopment.  John Smith, the BBC's Director of Finance and Property, gave the tribute.  He recalled how one of Chris's schoolteachers used to call him "Evans Above".
The service was followed by a private funeral at Watford Crematorium.
