This announcement, quoting John Smith, was posted on the Gateway internal system:
Chris Evans, the project director for the new Broadcasting House in London, died last night of cancer, aged 43.
John Smith, director of Finance, Property & Business Affairs, said: ‘Six feet 11 inches in his stockinged feet, Chris was never an easy man to overlook. Few who met him forgot him – and not only for his height but also his engagement, his common touch, his infectious enthusiasm, drive and good humour.’
Evans trained as a lawyer, but pursued a BBC career in Property, joining in 1988 as an assistant manager in Premises Operations and working up through the ranks to become facilities manager for TVC in 1996.
He then masterminded the News transfer to Stage 6 at TVC, and helped get the building back on stream within three days of the republican bomb attack in 2001. Later that year, he was appointed project director for the new Broadcasting House project - the £600m plan to transform the BBC’s London HQ.
John Smith adds: ‘Chris gave the building its blueprint, its management vision, and charted it through its obstacle-ridden inception process, achieving approval from Westminster City Council in record time.
‘All his friends and colleagues in Property, News and Facilities management will remember him with the strongest affection, and he leaves – quite literally – a building behind him with his name firmly on it
