Pensions "are safe"
Apr 10th, 2002, 11:07am

BBC pensioners get an explicit assurance about the safety of their pensions, in the current issue of Prospero.

Rhos Roberts, Head of Pensions, refers to the various anxieties about pensions in general and the BBC scheme in particular.  Roberts says the BBC is not immune from pressures, but continues:

"The BBC....regards the Pension Scheme as an important part of its employee benefits package.  The setting up of a New Benefits section in 1996 was a significant step in holding down costs to make the scheme more affordable.

"The 3-yearly valuation of the scheme by the actuary is currently underway and the results will be known towards the end of the year.

"We will then have an up-to-date assessment of the liabilities and the long-term cost of the Scheme.

"Pensioners need not worry, however, whatever the future shape of the Scheme.  Their benefits are secure."

Trust our pension managers and even the trustees? oh come on...

And still less the actuaries and accountants behind it all... more and more top-line companies are dumping their pledges...

And the BBC will too...

It's fine for existing pensioners hopefully locked into current cash... well I certainly hope so...

But what the hell about those now paying for what they hope will be enough to keep them afloat in their old age...
