Jimmy "Football" Jewell
May 15th, 2019, 2:11pm

Paul Hayes of BBC Radio Norfolk, is producing a documentary about Arthur James “Jimmy” Jewell.

It transpires that it was the sudden death of "Jimmy Jewel" that suddenly promoted Kenneth Wolstenholme to the prime BBC TV Commentary box.
"Jimmy" Jewel was the BBC’s first regular TV football commentator after the war. He was the main commentator from 1947 until 1952, doing all the cup finals and England games, etc, until he “died with his boots on,” dying in October 1952- the day before a major football match.

Paul is asking the impossible- does anyone know anything about "Arthur James “Jimmy” Jewell"?

WHY is Paul (of BBC Radio Norfolk) asking for help?
Because Jimmy” Jewell was briefly the manager of Norwich City in 1939.

So, if anyone has any "TV OB-type" memories of this sporting character please post here or DM "Admin" and we'll pass on the information!

We have received the following email from Paul concerning the documentary about Jimmy Jewell:-

Dear All,

I’m sorry for the rather impersonal nature of this email, but there are a *huge* number of you who assisted me with this programme, and I wanted to let you know when it’s going to be on.

The finished documentary about Jimmy is going out this coming Monday, the Bank Holiday, at 12 midday. It will of course be available online for 30 days after that – here’s the link should you wish to listen then or to share it with anybody:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p07kdtg0

I am enormously grateful to all of you for all of your help with this – whether you kindly agreed to be interviewed, recorded voiceovers, helped me with research and tracking down potential interviewees, offered words of advice or even just answered a speculative email about a line of enquiry which turned out to be a dead-end, you all very kindly took the time to help build Jimmy’s story out of next to nothing. Apologies to those of you whose interviews I have had to cut down quite drastically for the finished programme – I ended up with far more material than I ever thought possible!

Anyway, thank you again and I hope you enjoy the end result if you do have a listen on Monday or after. Do let me know if you’d like a copy of the programme to keep afterwards.

All good wishes,
Paul
