Tea-trolley Joyce.

For the information of many ex-BH staff in the 70s - 90s era, Joyce Rose has sadly passed away, aged 79.

An enormous character in a tiny frame, she served one and all with their morning and afternoon tea and buns from 'her' trolley on the 2nd Floor of BH Extension.

She received considerable Press attention when it became known that she'd told PM Maggie Thatcher - whilst on a visit to 'the JY Prog' - to get in the queue like everyone else! Less so when saddened by a News report of some poor children here in the UK, she'd once collared a Radio Producer and suggested that since the BBC had raised awareness of the situation facing young children in Africa, maybe it was time that they made people aware of the crisis facing some of the UK's poor and starving children ... and so began the process that ultimately became 'Children in Need'.

Much as it pains me to do so (and for which I must apologise) here's a link to the Daily Heil's 'effort' at an obituary for her - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6393305/BBC-tea-lady-inspired-Children-...

Joyce truly loved her job working for the Beeb because she was providing a service to the staff - 'her children' as she knew us. She really 'wanted' to look after those who visited her tea-trolley, and would on occasion even fiddle the till if you found you'd not got the right money to hand!!
Such service to the staff surely needs to be more widely recognised.  May you Rest in Peace now, Joyce.

Joyce not only enhanced the lives of those on the 2nd floor. She enlightened all those POAs and Studio managers when she parked her trolley of wonderful repasts next to the lifts on the 5th. No-one can forget her ham rolls after a sweaty session in QCR! May her memory(and her ghost) perpetuate in the annuls of BH history of the golden era of Radio! Smiley
