My favourite BBC World Service "Sound"?
What do you think? Listen
here.
Nothing beats Lillibulero fading in and out on short-wave, complete with distorted pips on the hour.
Whether it be in the far reaches of The Empire", (or in my case Portugal's Algarve coast 20 years ago!), that's The True BBC Sound for me.
Gravitas. "We'll get the truth to you- no matter how difficult".
While it's playing, you can imagine the engineers on Ascension Island, and at Woofferton or Daventry, riding their bikes to switch the short wave antennas in the field, risking their lives.... and Bush Control Room feverishly plugging, switching, and flashing red lights...just for 'me' so I can hear the BBC News.
Satellite distribution doesn't have the same 'feel' about it! It's too easy.
