John died suddenly in his nursing home on 12 September. His funeral is on 10 October at South Lincolnshire Crematorium, Surfleet at 2 pm, and afterwards at the Riverside Hotel, Surfleet.
In his working life he was officially part of Pebble Mill Audio Unit, but was based in Norwich, where he ran a type 'C' OB van (known as 'John Hands' van') and looked after all OBs in the eastern part of the region. In those days, before the A45, it took the best part of four hours to drive from Birmingham to Norwich.
