Steve Hewlett
Feb 20th, 2017, 5:41pm

Steve Hewlett has died aged 58. He had been diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus nearly a year ago.

He had been interviewed on 'PM' many times by his friend and colleague Eddie Mair about his illness and how he was dealing with it.

Steve had been involved with "Nationwide" in the early 80's.
He was running Panorama when it broadcast the controversial Princess Diana interview.

In his later years he presented "The Media Show" on Radio 4.

BBC director general Tony Hall said: "Steve Hewlett was an exceptional journalist. His analysis of the media industry was always essential listening.
"Steve was a trusted voice that embodied everything positive in public service journalism. He was hugely popular not just with viewers and listeners, but with BBC staff.

Radio 4 controller Gwyneth Williams said: "Steve Hewlett will be much missed as an outstanding journalist.
"He was rational and informed, hard-nosed and witty, never taking himself too seriously but unpicking the stories he covered with great seriousness.
"We will certainly miss his weekly presence on Radio 4, and I will miss him personally as a longstanding colleague from the days when we worked together in news. We send our deepest sympathy to his family."

Steve Hewlett was "the best editor (of Panorama)..arguably in the history of the programme" according to his former boss Mark Damazer.

The announcement was made at the RTS TV Journalism Award ceremony held on the 1st March.

Many UK broadcasters will be involved, and Steve's wife Rachel will help select the recipient who will be from a lower-income family following an undergraduate broadcast journalist course in the UK.
