Barry Rocard
Sep 17th, 2015, 5:56pm

A tribute to Barry Rocard, who was a News Organiser in the BH Newsroom for nearly 22 years, appears here, courtesy of Bill Rogers.

"Barry, who came to the UK from radio in Australia in 1970, had a distinctive deep bass voice, and relished opportunities to hit the mike key on his desk, which relayed news snaps around Broadcasting House, Television Centre and Bush House."

Barry left the BBC in 1992 and pursued an acting career.

In Barry's profile he wrote.

"I have a LAMDA senior acting Diploma. I live permanently in the UK and have dual British-Australian citizenship. These days I tend to specialise in Australian characters - including newspaper magnates of a certain age. I am also adept at'British' characters requiring RP or 'London-ish' accents."

Under "Additional Skills" Barry wrote "Experienced Minibus Driver".

Barry died suddenly at the age of 76.

Barry was one of the many Aussie journalists who learned their trade down under and then came to the UK.  He worked for commercial radio stations in Australia before arriving in the BBC Northern Ireland newsroom in Belfast.
From there he came to the Radio Newsroom in BH and spent many years in and around the GNS desk, as a sub, chief sub and News Organiser.
He had a deep voice, a laid-back manner and a mischievous sense of humour.   From his office window he could see down to the "sentry box" where a commissionaire guarded the entrance to the BH underground car park.  Barry found the phone number for this sentry box and would wait till the commissionaire went for a stroll before dialling the number.  The commissionaire would rush back and just as he reached for the phone Barry would ring off.  He would work the same trick continuously till the commissionaire became a fuming wreck, much to the amusement of Newsroom staff looking on.
Barry had a wonderful collection of radio "howlers" on tape, both from Australia and the UK.
After leaving the BBC he turned to his love of drama and spent many years acting in repertory theatre.  He also organised the annual ex-Newsroom Christmas Party.
He died on September 13th, of meningitis, at the age of 76.  He leaves a wife and daughter.

A sub-editor reports that when new to the newsroom and working on GNS, he took a call from a very irate listener in Northern Ireland.  He couldn't pacify or make any progress with this caller and in the end he referred to his superior, Barry Rocard.  Barry said:  "Did you give him your name?"  "No."  So Barry picked up the phone, said "F*** off Paddy", and calmly went back to his work.

I recall one night when an hot tempered FDE read a news flash over the microphone which was broadcast to all news and current outlets.  Barry, who was on the News Organisers desk with his back to the FDE phoned the FDE and said he was calling from TV news. Would the FDE repeat the message as they didn't get all of it.   The FDE then said: repeating for TV news, and repeated the news flash again.
Barry then phoned the fde again who was just sitting behind him and asked him to repeat his newsflash again as they still didn't get all of it.  By this time the FDE was blowing his top, and again repeated the message.  Meanwhile on the GNS desk we were in tears and trying not to laugh out loud!
