This is taken from Ariel, January 30, 2014:

Hugh Berlyn, ex-news online editor, dies at 61

Hugh Berlyn, former editor of the BBC's news and sport websites across England, has died.

He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last November and died at home this week at the age of 61.

Berlyn led the development of the English Regions news online service, based in Birmingham, before becoming editor of England's news and sport sites. He retired in 2010, having built an audience of more than 10m.

He was a 'charismatic editorial leader who recognised talent in his teams', said Eileen Murphy, the executive editor of BBC News Online England who worked with Berlyn for a decade.

'His passion for the highest journalistic standards and love of local news inspired all of those who worked with him to demand the best from ourselves and for our audiences,' she added.

'Whether ruling on a tough editorial dilemma or at leisure he would deliver his judgement with humour and the clarity that comes from being one of the best.'

Steve Herrmann, BBC News website editor, said Berlyn brought 'a tremendous rigour and clarity' to the local output of BBC News Online.

'This was born of his long experience as a journalist and the considerable skills he had built up along the way. He was widely respected by the website team and I personally greatly valued his good sense, his good humour and his integrity, and I will miss him.'

A former print journalist, Berlyn joined Radio WM in the early eighties as a news producer, before moving on to a news editor role at Radio Leicester.

He returned to regional newspapers, eventually becoming editor of the South Wales Evening Post with an editorial staff of 72, before going back to the BBC.

His funeral will be held at Worcester Crematorium on Monday, February 10 at 2.30pm.

A former colleague of Hugh's writes:

He was a very good bloke - came from a long background in newspapers and was a great old school journalist. Took no shit, insisted on high standards, handed out first rate bollockings and liked a cigarette and a couple at the bar.
