Alan Protheroe
Apr 7th, 2013, 8:28am

Alan Protheroe, who had a long career as a senior BBC journalist, has died at the age of 79.

He was Editor of Television News before eventually being appointed as Assistant Director General (News).  This put him at the centre of many controversies, including the row over the "Real Lives" programme in 1985.

He was a long-serving member of the Territorial Army and was known within News as "Colonel Protheroe".

He went on to run SSVC, the Forces broadcaster.

The Times has published this obituary (subscription needed to read the full version):

ALAN PROTHEROE
Outspoken BBC Deputy Director-General who battled with nervous governors over the corporation’s investigative journalism

Alan Protheroe became Editor of BBC Television News in the 1970s and Assistant Director-General in the 1980s during a stormy period at the corporation when the governors were increasingly censorious of editorial decisions. He combined these considerable duties with enthusiastic membership of the Territorial Army, being promoted to full colonel and appointed CBE (mil).

Alan Hackford Protheroe was born in 1934 in St Davids, Pembrokeshire, and brought up in a bilingual clerical household. His mother was a teacher who wrote children’s books and the young Alan inherited her skill with words in both languages. His parents wished him to teach, but he chose to leave Maesteg Grammar School at 16 to become a trainee journalist on the Glamorgan Gazette. His introduction to broadcasting was as a young radio actor — often alongside a youthful Richard Burton.

In his National Service (1954-56) he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Welsh Regiment; he remained fascinated with military matters for the rest of his life. He returned to BBC Wales in 1957 as a reporter, and two years later was promoted to be industrial correspondent and subsequently editor for all BBC Wales news and current affairs programmes in both English and Welsh. In 1970 his evident achievements in this role persuaded London to poach him for television news at Alexandra Palace, as assistant and then deputy editor. In 1977 he was appointed editor for what would be three successful years, and this led to his appointment as assistant director of news and current affairs for the whole of the BBC’s domestic output.

The BBC News web-site for Wales has published this tribute:-

"Former senior BBC journalist and executive Alan Protheroe CBE has died at the age of 79.

Originally from St Davids in Pembrokeshire, Mr Protheroe became assistant director-general of the BBC in the early 1980s.

He began his career in journalism at the age of 16 on the Glamorgan Gazette, joining BBC Wales in 1957.

BBC Cymru Wales Director Rhodri Talfan Davies described Mr Protheroe as "a journalist to the very core".

He said: "As Editor of BBC Wales News and Current Affairs during the 1960s, he was widely respected by those who worked with him - not just for his news judgement but also for his leadership, good humour and his straight-talking manner.

"Never afraid to speak out, he was also known as someone who really cared. He nurtured the potential of those who shone and the BBC was all the richer for it."

Mr Protheroe moved to BBC headquarters in London in 1970 and rose to become assistant director-general under Alasdair Milne.

He was also a long-serving member of the Territorial Army and went on to run the armed forces broadcaster SSVC after leaving the BBC in 1987."

The funeral will be on Monday, April 29th, at 12.30 at Holy Trinity Church, Cookham SL6 9SP.
Refreshments afterwards in church hall whilst close family goes to crematorium.  All welcome but if you are intending to go, please email Jill Wells, spelling that all as one word @ymail.com, as the family are trying to get a rough estimate on numbers expected.
