Working with NORMAN WISDOM

I have a fond memory of Norman Wisdom from my days as an Engineer at the old BBC Studios at South Western
House,Southampton.
In 1964 Norman became a director of Brighton and Hove Albion and was determined to make his presence felt on the pitch certainly at home games. South Today were of course keen to film his first appearance ( I suspect the film has long ago disappeared) ....and somehow Norman managed to persuade the BBC in Southampton to help him edit the song 'Good old Sussex by the Sea' so that he could get the crowd to sing along ......and indeed he eventually wrote some rousing new words to the song which became a Terrace anthem. Anyway I was on duty the evening he came in and I spent a good two hours recording and cutting up tape to his direction. He had a good grasp of the technology such as it was in those days and without reverting to silly voices and clowning but in a very entertaining way he worked happily on the product and eventually went off into the night clutching his new version of the song.
It was a pleasure for a rookie engineer to work with him.

Excellent!
I really liked Norman Wisdom watching him on the silver and small screen when I was a kid.
We should have a section dedicated to BBC folk who worked with the famous ( and for that matter infamous ).

What a fantastic piece of history. Pity Delia Smith didn't learn from it before she "entertained" the Norwich FC crowd.
I met Norman W twice. Once when I was filming interviews at The Grovenor Hotel at an Awards ceromony. My wife who was with me wanted a picture taken with him. He was over the moon and insisted on seeing the photos and would not stop until he approved . A month later I had to film an interview at a flat in London when his book was published. He said " I know you..you are Rosie's husband" and insisted on signing a copy of the book to Rosie. It is one of our prize possessions from my 30 year career and is certainly in the upper top ten memories...certainly makes up for all the other "so called stars" I had to put up with whilst forcing a smile!!!

Going 'off the topic' ever so slightly I once met Christopher Lee.
I was working for TV sport at the time in Villnius, Lithuania of all places.
He was staying in the same hotel as we were and iIapproached him in the restaurant one evening.
He was filming an American youth series " I play a sort of Merlin character...I don't know why because its a Robin Hood series...it's rubbish!!" he told me.
Eventually I did manage to get him into our company where we spent an interesting evening talking about his Scottish grandmother, Muirfield golf club ( where he is a member ) James Bond movies and The Wicker Man..funny but Dracula never once cropped up in the conversation.
