Peter Millest
Oct 2nd, 2009, 7:52am

Peter Millest, a News picture editor, died on October 1st in Croydon. He had been suffering from cancer.

Pete joined the BBC as a 17 year- old in 1967, in the Graphic Design Photography department at the Langham.  He went on to the News Film Editing department at Alexandra Palace as a trainee, moving from there to become an Assistant Film Editor.

With the inception of ENG he was promoted to be a Picture Editor around the 80’s. In this role he covered many foreign stories in Eastern Europe and later the first Iraq war.

With the mass redundancies in picture editing in 2000, he left the BBC with many emotions but later found some work as a freelance at BBC Millbank, before finally retiring for good.

In 2007 he underwent a major operation for cancer. His sole aim then was “not to let the Pension Scheme get away with it”. With the support of close friends he fought on through many chemotherapy sessions.

Last May, his doctors gave him three months.   But he battled on and outlived their predictions by a few weeks.

To the very end, he remained cheerful and grateful for all those who visited him and exchanged memories of happy days.

Funeral arrangements to follow.

Funeral arrangements:
To all of Peters friends and loved ones.

Peter passed away on Thursday the 1st October after a long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by some of his closest friends and had been well cared for in Oban House Nursing Home in South Croydon, and before that at St Christopher's Hospice. Peter refused to give up throughout his two and a half year fight. Until the very last day was walking around his room and stretching to try and keep going. He loved his friends very much and fought so hard so he could spend as much time with them as possible.

If you would like to attend his funeral service it will be taking place at 1230 on Thursday the 15th of October 2009 in Croydon Parish Church. The church is a 15 minute walk from East Croydon train station and around 10 minutes from West Croydon train station. There is limited parking, but because of the size of the event we will have to limit parking next to the church to those who are unable to walk long distances or those requiring cars to get to the burial. I will notify the 50 people who will be able to attend the burial separately.

Other parking is very close by. The Centrale Shopping Centre car park is 5 minutes walk from the church, and the Whitgift Centre car park is around 10 minutes walk.

After the service at 1230, Peters closest friends and family will be departing for the burial which will take place at 1430. All those not attending the burial are very welcome to enjoy food and drink in the Church Hall until we return.

Peter was always the smartest dressed man around town and as such we would like people to dress in their finest for the service. He was never a man who liked black so please feel free to wear something colourful and chic. The funeral will be a celebration of Peters life so please wear what you think he would have liked.

Peter also loved flowers and please feel free to buy some if you so wish. Here is a link to the florist handling our tributes. They work closely with the funeral directors (Ebbutts of Sanderstead, 15 Limpsfield Road, CR2 9LA). Just let them know they are for Peter and the rest will be sorted for you.

Peter was cared for by St Christopher's Hospice in Sydenham for some of his last two months. They are a charity and do an amazing job looking after the terminally ill and disabled. If you feel you would prefer to give some money rather than buy flowers then St Christopher's are more than deserving. There will be a collection plate at the back of the church where you can leave cash or a cheque. I'm sure you will understand that it is probably better to give money to this very hard working charity to help more people in Peters position, than to have 200 bunches of flowers.

If you require any more details email petermillestmemorial@hotmail.co.uk, and I will do my best to get back to you.

Kevin Hanley.
