Cardiff broadcast teacher dies Chris Tryhorn Friday June 1, 2007
Bob Atkins, the head of the broadcast journalism course at Cardiff University, has died aged 64.
Atkins, who was director of the Cardiff Journalism School's postgraduate broadcast course, died suddenly on Wednesday.
He had worked at the university's journalism department in that capacity since October 1992, training journalists including BBC foreign correspondents Damian Grammaticas and Chris Hogg, as well as Newsround presenter Laura Jones.
Before joining the CJS, he spent more than 20 years at the BBC as a journalist, editor and manager.
He worked as an editor at BBC Radio Wales, an executive producer for the World Service news and current affairs, and was a current affairs producer at BBC Television.
"He was a fabulous teacher and a totally dedicated man," said Professor Terry Threadgold, the head of Cardiff's journalism, media and cultural studies department. "He was a creative, innovative man who just loved what he did."
Colin Larcombe, Atkins' colleague on the Cardiff broadcast journalism course, added: "The course was his life and soul, he put 110% into it. He had students at his heart and worked tirelessly to make sure they were trained well.
"The course is recognised as the premier course in the country and you absolutely have to say that was down to Bob."
