Barry Whitehall
Jan 19th, 2004, 10:48am

This from John Bamber:

I am saddened to report that Barry Whitehall died last Friday, 16th January.  He had suffered a haemorrhagic stroke just over a week previously.  He underwent surgery at the Radciffe Infirmary in Oxford, but never regained consciousness.  He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.

Barry's funeral will take place at Dorchester Abbey in Oxfordshire (www.dorchester-abbey.org.uk) at 1130 this coming Thursday, and will be followed by a reception at the nearby White Hart Hotel.

Most will remember Barry as Controller of Resources at Bush.  Before that he was Chief Assistant to the Head of Monitoring at Caversham for many years.

Eric Bowman supplies some details about Barry's life and career:

Barry did National Service in the RAF and joined the BBC soon afterwards.  He had a number of interesting jobs in the World Service.  At one time he ran the radio station in the Solomon Islands on secondment.  Later he was Head of Overseas Adminstration, WS, and deputy General Manager of Monitoring. He succeeded Eric as General Manager at Caversham.  From there he was promoted to Controller of Resources, the job he held until his retirement.  He was a BBC man through and through.
In his spare time Barry was a keen golfer and particularly enjoyed playing near Valencia, where he had a home.
