barry brook learoyd obituary
Sep 7th, 2003, 8:45pm

Barry Learoyd MBE who died 26.8.2003 was described by Hugh Greene in 1968 as one of the pioneers of British Television. Barry joined the BBC in 1939 at Alexandra Palace as a designer. He designed many productions for the drama department often constucting his own sets. He also directed a production of The Disagreeable Man with Dennis Vance which was performed for the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1953. He became Senior Designer, however his fascination with colour led him to the post of Head of Colour Familiarisation for which he was awarded the MBE in 1968. In 1965 his design for the Eurovision symbol was selected and he was rewarded with a cheque for 25 guineas. Barry left BBC in 1968 to paint & sculpt which he did successfully for many years. We hope to arrange an exhibition of his work next year.
