Greg Dyke on public service broadcasting
Mar 27th, 2002, 12:10am

Greg Dyke says that the BBC's commercial income won't get significantly bigger in the future and will always be small compared to the licence fee.

He was speaking at a talk in London organised by the Institute for Contemporary Arts on the future of public service broadcasting.

Dyke said income from commercial sales amounted to something like £100 million a year and it would not increase very much.  Questioned by a Wall Street Journal reporter, he said BBC Worldwide would probably meet its targets to double the current level of income from sales, but this would still be a "comparatively small amount of money" alongside licence fee income, which is currently £2.4 billion.

In a fluent but not particularly revealing interview with Ian Hargreaves, Dyke offered a number of views:

On John Birt.  He said that when he (Dyke) arrived at the BBC too much attention was being paid to management.  And he felt that Birt's approach to sports rights did not take sufficient account of the needs of BBC viewers.

On the World Service.  He said it represented "the best things about Britain", including freedom, tolerance and thought.

On market forces.  He said it was important not to be "slaves to the market" and expect the market to deliver everything, because it would not.

On the BBC's greatest strengths.  He said universality was the key thing.  The BBC was "part of the glue" that held Britain together.

On News and Current Affairs.  He praised the coverage of major events but said he would like to see more investigations, and was trying to find additional money to make that happen.
