Title: David Witherow
Post by Administrator on Jan 26th, 2020, 8:20am

David Witherow, who was Deputy Managing Director of the World Service in the 1980s and 1990s has died.  He was 82.

He was one of those rare things:  a boss who was admired by his staff for his skills and his personal qualities.

David started in journalism as a graduate trainee at the Press Association.  He moved to Bush House in 1963 and became Editor of External Services News in 1972.

After a spell in television he was appointed to run Monitoring, where staff have described him as “the best boss we ever had”.

Back at the World Service, he was good in negotiations with the Foreign Office.  He secured the 5% funding increase that WS got in the Triennium  negotiations in 1989/90.  He also oversaw the NAO efficiency review into  WS that  led the Commons PAC to give WS a "clean  bill of health" over efficiency and effectiveness.

His funeral will take place on Monday 10th February at 2pm at The Golders Green Crematorium, 62 Hoop Lane, London NW11 7NL and afterwards at the Old Bull and Bush, North End Way, NW3 7HE.
