Title: Munchetty v. BBC
Post by Administrator on Sep 26th, 2019, 9:22am

Marcus Ryder, who in his BBC history worked in the Editorial Policy Unit, gives his opinion of a recent ruling.

He starts his blog:-
"On Wednesday 25th September the BBC’s Editorial Complaints Unit officially found that BBC Breakfast’s presenter Naga Munchetty had breached the corporation’s guidelines by offering a personal opinion on President Donald Trump’s retort to four congresswoman of colour to "go back" to the "places from which they came".

The Editorial Complaints Unit’s decision is wrong, and has three implications."

The BBC's director general Lord Hall has reversed a decision to partially uphold a complaint against Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty.

He told staff that Munchetty's words were not "sufficient to merit a partial uphold" of the complaint against her.

She had been found to have breached the BBC's guidelines over comments she made about a tweet from Donald Trump about four female politicians of colour.

Lord Hall said he "personally" reviewed the decision of the complaints unit.

Ofcom has criticised the BBC's 'lack of transparency' over Naga Munchetty case.

According to the BBC "Entertainment & Arts" web-page, here  ....

"Media watchdog Ofcom has said it has "serious concerns around the transparency of the BBC's complaints process" following its handling of the Naga Munchetty case."

Here is the exchange of letters.
