Title: Annual leave-Radio 2 DJs
Post by WG on May 27th, 2019, 9:25am

Looking ahead this week -monday to friday-I note that at least 6 (80%?)of the daytime shows on Radio2 are being presented by guest DJs in the absence of the main presenter. The main DJ's are obviously on half term leave.
In the good old days-annual leave was strictly rostered in both office, operational and presentational areas was it not?

I too remember working for the Broadcasting organisation that did that!

I recall that in our terms of service, leave/working hours were 'subject to the needs of broadcasting'.

The phrase "exingencies of the service" comes to mind!

Absolutely, Ken. It was thrown at me on more than one occasion in regard to where I could live and even how much time I could have for my honeymoon before returning to cover an election.  But does it not show that R2 Presenters are no longer regarded as crucial to the "exingencies"?  I do find myself wondering when poor Laura Kuenssberg is going to get a well deserved holiday! 31st October maybe?

In order to ensure xmas leave-it was often necessary to "book" it in January.
I did a xmas day as an SM once and got £100 extra in 1971....that was worth quite a lot then!.....

We had an unofficial agreement to ask around for a volunteer if we wanted leave over a public holiday if our rota had us working.  Needless to say, there always was one!

I assume Dickie that you swapped shifts-rather than the volunteer gaining a day's overtime?

Yup.  Those on day off worked the shifts for those who wanted the day off.  No next cost to the beeb, other than what would have been paid.
