Title: News judgements Post by Burstner55 on Aug 18th, 2018, 9:11pm Kofi Annan, Nobel Peace Prize winner, 3 mins on the 10 o clock news; Aretha Franklin, pop singer, 12 minutes on 10 o clock news. And a reprise at the close etc etc Dumbing down ? Don't make me laugh ! "We need to appeal to the young" sounds OK but "the young" hardly know Aretha. We were all moved by Mr Annan's brave attempts to bring sanity to a mad world. He is surely the one that deserves R.E.S.P.E.C.T. ? |
Title: Re: News judgements Post by WG on Aug 19th, 2018, 9:40am She was a fantastic singer-but don't forget it is august. News channels and programmes were struggling to fill. Not usually a problem for the BBC since they can always slot in/fill with sport, but friday they were given the gift of music. Incidentally, BBC2's Newsnight also covered Aretha-but they led and came at it from her upbringing, values and human rights angles-which I don't believe was a controversial issue for the many millions of her fans and certainly not for a minimal audience late night current affairs TV show on a friday evening in mid summer. Having said that-the Aretha TV special on saturday pm BBC was a fantastic TV opportunity. But why was it so short(30 mins?)... :( |
