Title: Stuart Wilkinson, Current Affairs
Post by Nicola_W on Apr 17th, 2017, 10:52am

Stuart Wilkinson (also known as Charles Stuart Wilkinson, born 31st August 1928, died 6th February 2017) sadly passed away after suffering with Alzheimer’s for a number of years.  His last place of residence was the Peartree Care Centre in Sydenham.  He was in the final stages of Alzheimer’s and suffered a massive bleed to the brain at Lewisham Hospital.  His funeral was a small service for family and close friends, and took place at Honor Oak Cemetery on 6th March.  His ashes were buried, next to his mother’s, at St Peter’s Church, Chellaston, Derby on 8th April.

Stuart joined the BBC in Plymouth in 1962 as a part-time News Assistant in sound, after many years in print journalism.  He became Deputy Editor of Nationwide in 1972.  After becoming Chief Assistant for Current Affairs, Stuart was seconded to Hong Kong as Deputy Director of Broadcasting.  His contribution to Broadcasting was marked by the award of an MBE in the 1985 New Year’s Honours list.  In 1986 he joined the BBC’s Information Division as the Deputy Head, following which he took retirement in the same year.

This obituary has been penned by his daughter, Nicola Westover (née Wilkinson).

Correction to the obituary for Stuart Wilkinson: Stuart actually joined the BBC in Bristol and then his career took him to Plymouth around 1967.
