Mavis Williams, a long-serving shiftleader in the Radio Newsroom at BH, has died. She had been getting treatment for cancer when she had a stroke. She died in St Thomas's Hospital in London. More later.

Mavis was born in Prestatyn in North Wales on November 11, 1941, the youngest of three sisters. Her father was serving in the Army at the time. He was discharged for health reasons during the war and the family moved to Liverpool, where Mavis grew up.
After school she got a job in the offices at Woolworths and worked there for a few years before getting a desire to see the country.
She worked in a hotel in Norfolk and for the NAAFI at an RAF base in Anglesey.
In 1974 she got a job with the BBC in London, initially, it's believed, in the Appointments Department. After a few years she took a job in the Radio Newsroom, where she quickly became a shift leader.
Mavis was a great favourite among her colleagues. She was quiet and efficient but with a twinkling Scouse humour that was never far from the surface. She did not have the stereotypical redhead temper, but she was known to get angry with the photocopier now and again. She eventually took early retirement in 1999 after 25 years service.
She liked taxing her brain with crosswords and puzzles, going on holiday abroad with friends and attending office reunions.
She died in St Thomas's Hospital in London of stomach cancer.
She leaves her two sisters, Maureen and Brenda.

If anyone is thinking of sending flowers, Mavis's family would prefer a donation to St. Thomas's Hospital Intensive Care Unit.

After the funeral there will be refreshments at Miller & Carter restaurant on Bury Street, not far from the crematorium.
