Title: Byford sets up inquiry
Post by Forum Admin on Feb 18th, 2004, 4:32pm

Acting Director General Mark Byford has set up a committee to learn the lessons of the Gilligan affair and interpret the findings of the Hutton Report.

It will be led by Ron Neil, who was one of Mark Byford's mentors in BBC News and the Regions.

The email announcement is as follows:

Message to all BBC staff from Mark Byford...

Subject: Hutton:Editorial Review

Following the publication of Lord Hutton's report I am now leading a
review of the editorial lessons to be learned for the BBC.  I have
formed a small review group to assist me in this task over the next
three months.

The team will be chaired by Ron Neil, the respected former Director of
BBC News and Current Affairs who worked for the BBC for thirty years. Ron
is widely recognised both inside and outside the Corporation as one of
broadcast journalism's best ever editorial leaders.  He will be joined by
Glenwyn Benson Controller Factual Television; Helen Boaden Controller
Radio 4; Adrian Van Klaveren Head of Newsgathering BBC News; Richard Tait
former Editor in Chief ITN; and Stephen Whittle Controller Editorial
Policy.

The remit of the review is:

*     To examine the editorial issues for the BBC raised by the Hutton
Inquiry and Report;

*     To identify the learning lessons and make appropriate
recommendations, including necessary revisions to the Producers'
Guidelines and to the handling of complaints.

The review team will support me in the work and I hope to take forward
the recommendations to the Executive Committee and then to Board of
Governors in June.
