Title: ID cards for pensioners
Post by Forum Admin on Mar 6th, 2003, 9:47am

The BBC is introducing a new identity card for retired staff, giving them access to BBC buildings.

This follows a series of complaints about the withdrawal of the old-style pensioner-passes two years ago.

The new ID card will be free to those who apply for it.

There is a four-week window in which to apply.

From Monday March 10, for an "initial period" of four weeks, pensioners will be able to ring a new telephone hotline, 0208 225 6131, between 10 am and 4 pm.

After you have left your name and address, the nearest BBC office that issues ID cards is supposed to call you back within two working days.

You will need to go into the office in question with a pension slip and a utility bill as proof of identification.  They will take your picture and put in into the BBC's "Staff Finder" computer system, that is used by reception desks.

It appears that you will not be issued with your card there and then, but will have to return another time to pick it up.

After that you will be able to use the card to sign yourself, and up to two guests, into any of the main BBC premises.

Some success at last... but as ever the dogged bureaucrats make it relatively hard to get a card... depends how far that "local" BBC office is... and two journeys will be involved?... come on...why can't we just post a photo and documentation?
And what about those about to retire... will they now get their Pensioner Passes as or before they finally leave their workplace?
Surely existing staff ID cards could simply now be stamped Retired and carry on being used... they were once...

It worries me that the individual responsible for the removal of pensioners from BBC premises may still be employed by the BBC.
Or is it the case the he is now approaching retirement and has seen the error of his way(s).
The BBC has been landed with huge costs in employing more people to service the ID requirements of a lot of pensioners.
No wonder the licence fee has to keep going up!

I was dismayed to see that we are now described on the ID card as Pensioner and not Retired Staff as before. It just needs a prisoner number beneath to complete the effect.     >:(
