Title: Sackings of WS pair Post by Reithian on Mar 1st, 2003, 11:08am The National Union of Journalists is to ballot its members in the BBC (see postingbelow) to see if they support strike action over the dismissals of Adli Hawwari and Abdul Hadji. The Guardian report is here Previously, the unions at Bush had demanded the reinstatement of the two men. Read here. An angry row has developed as a side-issue to the sackings. It followed a remark by NUJ Deputy General Secretary John Fray, who said the BBC had "left itself open to accusations of the World Service being lackeys of the government" These links follow the story as it has developed in the news pages and letters column of the Guardian: Original news story quoting John Fray Alex Brodie takes offence NUJ appears to backtrack Another union official defends John Fray Alex Brodie and Mark Byford reply John Fray and WS FOC join in |
Title: Re: Sackings of WS pair Post by Forum Admin on May 1st, 2003, 9:40pm Journalists in the BBC have voted against a strike in support of the two sacked World Service journalists, Adli Hawwari and Abdul Hadi Jiad. It seems that about 1300 of the 3000 NUJ members in the Corporation took part in a ballot. 55 per cent were against a strike and 45 per cent in favour. A second vote, for limited industrial action, was won, with 63 per cent in favour, and that action will begin on May 15th. It will involve a "withdrawal of goodwill", and other measures will be planned by individual chapels (union branches). |
