Title: BBC takes over Digital Terrestrial Television Post by Forum Admin on Jul 4th, 2002, 11:20pm The BBC will take over DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) following the demise of ITV Digital. The Independent Television Commission, as expected, awarded the licences left vacant by ITV Digital's collapse to the consortium headed by the BBC, and including the transmitter company, Crown Castle, and BSkyB. The licence will run for 12 years. The ITC set a number of conditions, including a stipulation that BSkyB must not become involved in the running of the new service. The channels the BBC is intending to make available on the new service are: BBC ONE BBC TWO BBC Choice/Cbeebies BBC News 24 BBCi text ITV 1 ITV 2 Channel 4 spare for C4 Teletext Channel 5 QVC / S4C TV Travelshop * / S4C2 ITN News BBC Parliament The Community Channel BBC FOUR / CBBC BBCi (interactive) 6 BBC Radio Services Sky News Sky Sports News Sky Travel UK History Commercial Radio * CNN/Boomerang/TCM An entertainment channel * A music service * An interactive service * Commercial Radio * (* = to be confirmed) Read the ITC press release here Read the Guardian story here |
