Title: "Privatise the BBC" Post by Administrator on Apr 28th, 2016, 2:14pm According to this article in "The Independent":- "An influential conservative think-tank, with links to the Culture Secretary John Whittingdale, will call for the wholesale privatisation of the BBC to combat its left wing bias. In a controversial report the Institute of Economic Affairs claims that Britain’s national broadcaster is “no longer fit for purpose”. It cites a new analysis of BBC output suggesting that the organisation is biased against big business, free market economics and campaigners who want to pull Britain out of the European Union. In contrast, it claims, the corporation has a left wing bias on issues such as gender pay equality, global warning and Government cuts. It concludes that if the BBC were to be privatised the public would become “more appropriately sceptical” about potential bias while the corporation would “bear a considerable commercial cost” if its reputation were impaired." |
Title: Re: "Privatise the BBC" Post by JohnW on May 1st, 2016, 12:35am And now, the Daily Heil has this to add to the mix. "The BBC will be barred from showing Strictly Come Dancing in a prime Saturday night slot under tough new rules planned by embattled Culture Secretary John Whittingdale. The Minister is poised to tell the BBC they must stop screening their most popular shows at the same time as hit programmes on ITV – spelling an end to the traditional Saturday night ratings war between light entertainment shows such as Strictly and ITV’s X Factor. The clampdown would also force the BBC to stop showing top-rated dramas such as Poldark and The Night Manager on Sunday evenings if that meant going head-to-head with major ITV dramas. Critics say the BBC should not be using licence-payers’ money to aggressively pursue ratings at the expense of commercial rivals." God, give me strength!!! |
