Fewer staff in South Africa and Afghanistan

GAINS

An increase in the budget for the World Service, from £245m this year to £250m in 2016-17

Reintroduce a controller for the World Service in English
A new, small specialist unit based in Birmingham reporting on Community Affairs
"The BBC's News department is to axe 415 jobs as cost-cutting measures continue, the BBC's director of news James Harding has announced.

The move is part of £800m efficiency savings required after the licence fee was frozen in 2010.

The latest cuts are expected to save £48m per year."

Just read the memo to staff, and as a former General Reporter and proud of it, I was struck by this innovative proposal:

"We propose the creation of a new team of general Newsgathering correspondents and reporters, with a new job description covering a wider variety of UK and global stories. This will replace the existing UK Reporter pool and the World Affairs Correspondent roles.

The new News Correspondent posts will be advertised and there’ll be an opportunity for staff within Newsgathering who are at risk of redundancy to apply for them. While platform or subject specialisms will be valued, there is an expectation that this team will adopt a multi-platform approach to work to reflect our digital ambitions. "

Blimey, this is exactly what I used to do in the 1980s. Maybe I should apply....
