Title: SD/HD EPG swaps start on DSAT
Post by Dickie Mint on Mar 23rd, 2014, 11:15am

Prior to the introduction of the new BBC3/4/CBBC/CBeebies/News HD channels Alix Pryde said in her blog  :-
"One goal in our approach to distributing our channels is to put the ‘best’ version of a channel first in the EPG, where the ‘best’ version has the right availability of nations or regional content, followed by the highest picture quality."

That now seems to be happening on Monday for BBC1 and BBC2, but the only announcement is buried in the BBC Media part of bbc.co.uk !

And I thought we were a Media organisation!

What a mess!
Isn't it a shame that Sky and Freesat boxes don't enable "channel position swapping" like some freeview and PC based receivers do.
Then one could simply make 101 - 108 etc one's preferred channels in SD or HD and only (in England anyway who don't get HD regional variations) have to go to stupid number plans with no numerical reasoning when wanting to watch the occasional regional news content.
I understand why there aren't English regional HD satellite feeds to save transponder rental etc and ITV do have to have them because of regional advertising and some sort of regional branding.
There are going to be thousands of "peed off" viewers who have bought HD teles and never knowing where to go (except to stick with ITV).

BBC1 HD should be at the bottom of EPG lists everywhere as long as it continues to run a test card instead of regional news summaries(eg at 22.25). Extraordinary that this state of affairs comfortably exists month after month......action-Lord Hall

Yes, that was a total thingy up!  And no publicity - does joe public know yet?  And BBC1 didn't swap HD and SD positions.

I can understand keeping BBC1SD in England as 101.  Apart from wanting HD viewers to find their Regional opts in the same bunch of channels there is the very rarely used Emergency function of BBC1 Regional.  Such things as extreme weather and toxic fumes from the now common recycle plant fires can be kept at least to the Region.  And not alarm the whole UK!
And I can't recall the name of the emergency recall system?
