Title: SKY to pay BBC?
Post by Amigo on Aug 9th, 2013, 5:03pm

Now that it no longer necessary for BBC programmes to be broadcast on the SKY Pay-TV platform, perhaps now is the time to charge SKY carriage fees?

According to this site:-
http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2013/08/09/bbc-proms-plays-on-despite-sky-hd-absence/

BBC TV HD coverage of some Proms is NOT available on the SKY platform.

"Coverage of The Proms on BBC Four are being broadcast without an HD simulcast on Sky because of a dispute with the satcaster.
Previously HD broadcasts of the annual promenade concerts have been carried on the now lapsed BBC HD channel, but following the replacement of the BBC HD channel by the BBC Two simulcast, selected HD shows are being carried via the Red Button."

BBC TV is on the Freesat platform, and is available throughout the UK, so carriage by SKY is discretionary.

Why should the TV Licence-payer subsidise this service? Those that want BBC TV by satellite can get it via FREESAT!

According to "The Telegraph" here.

"The Culture Secretary, Maria Miller, ........ said: “Our public service broadcasters should not have to pay other platforms and service providers to carry their content, especially given the clear value this content provides.”
The Government is urging the industry to reach an agreement, with the threat of legislation, but no progress has been made. Ms Miller renewed the pressure last night in a speech to the Royal Television Society conference in Cambridge."
