Title: The Savile Affair
Post by Knocking On on Nov 23rd, 2012, 7:52pm

Has anyone had a letter from the DG's office this week concerning the above?.

I did....I suppose because I worked on TOTP's in the 80's.....although I can't even remember seeing him, and certainly didn't see anything untoward either.

Just interesting after all this time you are still on the system somewhere.

Yes, I got one too.  Must read it.  I was based at BH in the early years of my BBC career, and often went to TVC, so I suppose that's why I got one.  Which seems to show that not only am I still on the radar, but so is my file??....

Perhaps the clue is the Postmark is CARDIFF. Perhaps Pensions are selling DATA?

Yes--it must be the folk who worked in Radio or associated trappings.
Would be interested if any retired mastclimbers from TCPD got the letter?

I guess that the letter has gone to all pensioners who worked for the BBC during the years that Savile was around. I was at BH from 1963-65, Bush House from 1966-70 and Local Radio thereafter (until 1998).Its even possible that it's gone to all pensioners, since the witness information enclosed with the letter says they would like to hear from people who "were familiar with the culture and practices of the BBC at that time insofar as they may have been relevant to preventing or enabling sexual abuse."

I agree, it must have gone to everyone.  I worked in Finance Division, London based from 1963 to 1982.

Yes, must have been sent to everyone.  My copy arrived yesterday.  I don't have much to say to them tho.

Judging by comments from friends and former colleagues I think the letter was sent to ALL former staff not just those who have retired but also those who left to work elsewhere. Pensions will of course have their details.

The BBC seem to have sent almost everyone who passed through their doors a copy of the letter. A colleague who left 18 years ago received one, even though he isn't a BBC pensioner. I had one too, and assumed that it was because I regularly worked on TOTP and "Jim'll Fix It" when Savile was presenting, but that reason doesn't apply to many others on the mailing list. It must be costing a small fortune in postage costs alone.

I was beginning to get worried that mine hadn't arrived, but it turned up yesterday: it's a long way to Andalucia, I suppose. I am unable to help, but I reckon that the DG's letter would have failed the objectivity test when I did the NCTJ training course at Harlow Tech all those years ago.

I received a letter also, for my time at Worldwide 1994 - 2011, so the letter net has been cast wide indeed.

I wonder also if steps are being made to trace any casual staff that might have been around - night porters or security, late shift canteen staff, cleaners and so on, who might have been around in the quieter moments when the authority figures had all gone home. Does anyone know if they are being traced?
