This is ridiculous - and not a new 'claim' either!
Almost everyone who was 'famous' at the time would have been "taking some advantage" of the "offers" being made to them! Certainly the musicos of that era were - think Led Zeppelin and the like - and the current ones probably still are!! http://www.ex-bbc.net/yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/wink.gif
If we are really honest with ourselves, who wasn't a teeny bit envious and would have liked to be in such a position!
And remember the Janie Jones episode, where DJs (and even their producers) were being offered 'favours' - the operative word here is "offered"!!

But I think there is a very real difference in the situations: 'casual sex' was the currency of the day - yet one doesn't get the feeling that JS was putting it about in that way. He was a 'devious' little man who could turn on the charm in the twinkling of an eye. Yet you always knew there was 'something strange' about him when working with him. Even my wife commented about it once when she was with me and we chanced to meet him outside of the studio/working environment.
John Peel, however, was a 'great guy' - I know that from working with him over nearly two decades of his programmes. He never made claims to be a saint in his younger days; during rehearsals and throughout his programmes we would often natter about events he'd been to. It even transpired that I'd been at school with his younger brother Alan whilst he was doing his National Service at Valley!
This 'ancient' event shouldn't overshadow everything that John gave to his millions of listeners/fans. Re-naming Egton as the 'John Peel Wing' is a truly fitting tribute to him - even if we old 'uns might still refer to it as Egton!

Perhaps the Beeb should also review its associations with Eric Gill (the BH stonework, the use of the Gill Sans typeface). According to his own diaries he was up to some pretty nasty things. See Wikipedia for more details. But he was an "artist" so it's probably OK. :-X
