Title: Re: Patten v Paxman Post by Administrator on May 6th, 2011, 9:23am It wasn't particularly penetrating but quite interesting to watch his demeanour. He was very relaxed. Paxman couldn't lay a glove on him. Patten said he was "beyond all political ambition" and this would be his last job and he was clearly very pleased to have it. He said the BBC's job was to produce programmes that otherwise probably wouldn't exist. The BBC would have to do less of quite a few things, in order to meet its budgetary objectives. He hoped services wouldn't have to go, but was not taking an entrenched position on that. He did say that he accepted some posts would need to pay the competitive rate to attract the right kind of people, but he said he'd been talking to the DG about executive pay. A longer-term strategy would be needed covering pay, the number of senior managers and the question of fairness of pay structures. He disclosed he was offered a job as a management trainee at the BBC 40-odd years ago, but he turned it down to go into politics. |
